As I drive to the studio almost every day, I see this tree framed by the soybean fields around it. When the leaves began to fall, I finally recognized why I look. The branches seem to screw into the surroundings, holding on. I often wonder why the farmers of York county, the frugal bunch that they are today, would, 100 years ago, leave one tree in the middle of a field to interfere with planting and harvest.
